If you live in an area with a large population then you’re going to have to deal with rats that’s just the way that it is when you’re in a city. Rats have existed right beside humans for their entire history and that’s not something that’s going to be changing anytime soon. These rodents are scavengers and human beings constantly produce enough waste to keep massive populations of rats around them, all over the entire planet.

Rather than trying to deal with rats after they infest your home, your best option is to find ways to prevent pest infestation before it even happens and it’s not that difficult. If you can think like a rat then you can figure out all the different ways that they can get into your house and you can stop it from happening. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way and you’re going to be happy you were proactive and stopped the problem from materializing.

Check your foundation

The most common way for a rat to get into your house, by far, is right through your foundation and that’s where you have to start the inspection of your home. Keep in mind that rats can tunnel and gnaw through almost anything that stands in their way. It’s very common for rats to chew through any wooden barriers that you have around your foundation.

These usually come in the form of window covers used for appliance ventilation but they can also be doors or molding. It’s to reinforce those entry points or replace them with metal covers that will keep the rats from being able to chew through. That’s the first step in making sure that your home is secure.

Keep Everything Clean

It’s also very important that you keep everything as clean as possible, especially your living spaces and your basement. Rats love empty boxes and places to hide during the colder months of the year. If you have things they can nest in all over your basement then you’re going to be inviting them right inside your home and you’re going to have a tough time getting rid of them.

It’s also very important that you keep food storage out of your basement or areas that you’re not frequently using in your house. Boxes and bags of non-perishables are a feast for any kind of rat and they’re going to stay for as long as they have food. It will also be the ideal place for them to breed and that’s a big problem.

Hire Pest Control

If you find out that you have a rat problem, then don’t waste any time in hiring a pest control company. They’re professionals and they’ll know how to solve your problem.

If you try to go it alone then you’re just going to give the rats more time to move in and breed. The problem can quickly grow out of control and you don’t want that. Let them help get rid of the infestation and make sure it will never happen again.
