How to keep House Clean when a Dog is in Heat?

Previously, we discussed everything that goes around when a female dog experiences ‘heat’, also known as their Estrus cycle. With their whole body going through tremendous changes, it may be difficult for novice pet parents to care for them, let alone take care of their little accidents.

But contrary to what one may feel, it is super necessary to keep your house and female dog clean when they are in heat. Below are some of the best proven cleaning tricks, so make sure to read until the end.

How to keep your floors clean when your female dog is in heat?

How to keep House Clean when a Dog is in Heat?

The best bet to keeping your house clean when your female dog is in heat is to mop regularly with a special dog odor removing agent. You can also invest in a good quality dog-specific sanitary napkin or go for bloomers that come with pads attached to them.

Even though the canids lick themselves clean, a few drops may still get on your furniture, floors, or worse clothes. These drops could then easily stain or serve as microbial breeding grounds, causing the onset of infections or worse fungal spreads at the site.

And while wiping it with plain water may seem to be doing the job, it doesn’t completely remove the odor, which could lead to ‘male marking’, creating even more of a mess. Hence, to avoid such frustrating situations, you can:

  • Bathe your canid

Possibly, the best solution to having your house clean is to bathe your canid when she is in heat. But, beware given that they are already uncomfortable, it could easily make them unpredictable and snappy when forced out too much.

Therefore, to simplify this process and make it more enjoyable, it is better to enforce positive reinforcement to lure your fur baby into the tub. You can also use warm water, depending upon the weather to further comfort them and be extremely gentle when scrubbing their bodies.

Never force them into doing your bidding, as it will only cause them to feel more irate and finally fight back.

  • Follow efficient spot-cleaning

If your female pooch doesn’t show willingness to bathe, cleaning their lady parts and back legs can prove beneficial. Use a clean damp cotton cloth to gently wipe their space between the back legs, rear side fur, and their tail every few hours. And in case your female lets you touch their vulva, you can also wipe it down.

You can use any canine-friendly spot removal solutions or go with plain water for the same. Once done, then follow the areas with a dry cloth to gently pat dry without stroking too hard. Always remember that the little lady is already suffering, so it’s better not to make the situation even harder for them.

However, unlike giving them a full bath, spot-cleaning doesn’t offer them a thorough and long-lasting cleaning. The smell won’t go away as no shampoo is involved. Furthermore, for long-haired breeds the same may not be at all fruitful.

  • Use doggy diapers

Loved and adored by many dog parents, doggy diapers are very much similar to sanitary napkins. They generally come in two forms, one being the use-and-throw type, while the other can be reused as many times after a thorough wash.

These are very convenient to use and put on, and most importantly don’t stress out the females. Moreover, another added benefit of putting on these britches is that given their long-lasting holding capacities, they can easily hold pee accidents, thereby preventing the need of excessive cleaning and mopping of the floors. Reusable britches are considerably economical and also hygienic.

  • Limit her space when unmonitored

No matter if your little lady is wearing her special pair of doggy diapers or has been bathed recently, you might still want to limit their space of movement, just to be extra safe. For instance, if your canine is good with crates or has a separate playing space guarded by fences, you can have her chilling while you are away.

But make sure to leave a bowl of fresh water, toys and some old bedding and blankets. Never leave the poor creature to sleep on the cold tiled floors as it could cause them even more discomfort. Similarly, before leaving them alone for long hours do give her a good walk and let her finish nature’s call prior to being confined to a particular area.

  • Clean stains immediately

Another dreadful nightmare, pet parents should always be ready to treat blood stains on the floor as early as possible. Although most females clean them repeatedly, there could be some blood drops here and there, which could easily make a deep stain. And for this you will require the best quality stain removers that also leaves a fresh smell afterwards.

However, if the stain is on a furniture or your clothes, spot removers are your best bet out of these messy situations. Based upon their specific working guidelines, you may need to use a damp cloth or proceed by directly putting a few drops on the part.

  • Cover up your couch or bed

Rather pushing your beloved woofer off your bed or couch when they are on heat, covering the places in question is no wonder the superior choice. This way the pooch will be able to have a nice rest without compromising the safety and hygiene of your furniture or mattress. The covers will also absorb all of the discharges, keeping your home stain and odor-free.

However when doing so always ascertain that the covers you are using are soft and preferably cotton. This is because unlike other materials, cotton is fairly easy to wash and dry, and also doesn’t lead to bruising due to accidental friction between the cloth and the pooch’s body. Additionally, it is considerably better if the covers are of darker colors, as witnessing blood spots on white or lighter ones can be upsetting to many.

  • Use air fresheners to get rid of the smell

How to keep House Clean when a Dog is in Heat?

Now with all the above mentioned procedures depicting the right way to keep your house clean, here’s what you can do to make them smell fresh when your female dog is in heat.

Although dog discharges aren’t that smelly, the females typically develop a strong body odor during these times to attract males. All these pheromones topped with the smell of pee accidents could easily make your home feel stuffy and prone to microbial infestations.

Thus, to efficiently tackle such situations it is better to follow up by spraying a dog-friendly air freshener once you are done with the cleaning. The components within the unique formula will aid in faster digestion of all nasty smelling pheromones, leaving your house smelling fresh and sweet for a long time.

Caring for your home while your canid is on heat is not rocket science. You just need to be thorough, quick and prepared to deal with the discharges with your set of cleaning tools.

And if you don’t want to go through such phases at all, spaying your canine is the ultimate choice.
